Types of Eczema

Eczema can take several forms. Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by contact with a substance that causes an allergic reaction. Poison ivy and poison sumac are the most common causes of allergic reactions in the United States.

Atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent form of eczema. Characterized by patches of dry, red skin that may be scaly and have overlying crusting, it usually occurs on the face, neck, elbows, knees, and ankles. People who suffer from this form of eczema often complain of very itchy skin. Although there is no cure for atopic dermatitis, most cases can be controlled with proper treatment and simple lifestyle changes.

Eczema Treatments

While everyone reacts differently to atopic eczema and its care, doctors have found some treatments that work for most everyone who has the skin condition.

Many people find some relief from their symptoms by taking a warm, not hot, bath or shower followed by immediately moisturizing the skin. Adding bleach, baking soda, vinegar, salt, or oatmeal to the bathwater may help alleviate some specific symptoms, as well. Talk with your dermatologist for guidance.

Dry skin due to an imbalance in the top layer of skin is often the culprit behind eczema. Therefore, taking care to moisturize the skin after exposure to irritants like wind, cold temperatures, low humidity, or harsh soaps can lessen any flares that may arise.

Other lifestyle changes that may help reduce symptoms include wearing soft, lightweight clothes, avoiding stress-inducing situations, and resisting the urge to scratch and rub affected areas of the skin.

Dermatologist-prescribed treatments can range from oral antihistamines that can relieve itching to phototherapy, where a machine emits light rays onto the skin to reduce inflammation and increase Vitamin D production. Corticosteroids, in the form of creams, ointments, and other topically applied concoctions, provide fast relief of itching and inflammation. They are often the first treatment prescribed for mild eczema. They can also come in pill form, which is generally reserved for more severe cases. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are safe to use on any affected area, including eyelids, and work by turning off the immune system in the applied location so the skin will not react to any irritants.
