Acne Treatment

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition presenting with blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and often painful cysts. This can occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulder, and upper arms. Acne usually begins in puberty and affects many teenagers and young adults.

What causes acne?

Acne is a result of overactive oil glands that produce too much oil that combine with skin cells to plug pores. When the pores in the skin become plugged, this leads to increase bacteria on the skin causing acne lesions.

How do I care for my acne?

Wash your face gently once or twice a day and after sweating with a mild, nondrying cleanser. Avoid vigorous washing and scrubbing of your skin as that can make your acne worse. Avoid popping, squeezing, or picking at your acne to prevent scarring. To reduce the risk of scarring, seek treatment early for severe acne that does not respond to over-the-counter medications.

What treatments are available for acne?

There are many effective therapies for acne:

  • Topical therapy including benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, and salicylic acid
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Oral contraceptives for female patients
  • Spironolactone
  • Accutane – 85% of patients will be cured of their acne after one course
  • Chemical peels
